About Project India Cracked

Project India Cracked has been closed since Nov, 2002.

Project India Cracked was launched on 28/04/2000, with the objective of bringing to light the large number of Indian themed sites that were being defaced by crackers. This is the second year of operation and I am saddened by the way things have not changed in these 2 years. Defacements have been going on at regular intervals and no counter measures seems to have be takes. Media has taken up the subject and India Cracked has been quoted on several occasions. However, the highr powers seems to be ignorant of the problems or consider them too insignificant.

Sites have life, and they can be violated. This Project -India Cracked- lists Indian based/themed sites that have been violated/cracked in the near past. As I see it, sites are cracked for 3 main purposes.

* Fun
* To prove expertise
* Political Propaganda

The third reason is usually the one applicable to Indian sites. Propaganda of Pakistan supported 'Jihad' in Kashmir takes the center stage. Politically, I don't know who is at fault(though I wish that it is not the Indian authorities). All I can say is that the poor security in place on the sites and the incapability of site administrators are the technical reasons. To them I say "For god sake, if you don't know what you are doing, Don't do it! Don't let your site become a propaganada medium for anti India(n) sentiments... Please."

Foot Note:
Why have I used 'crack'/'cracked' instead of 'hack'/'hacked'? To quote from the "Jargon File"

hack [very common] 1. n. Originally, a quick job that produces what is needed, but not well. 2. n. An incredibly good, and perhaps very time-consuming, piece of work that produces exactly what is needed.

cracking n. [very common] The act of breaking into a computer system; what a cracker does. Contrary to widespread myth, this does not usually involve some mysterious leap of hackerly brilliance, but rather persistence and the dogged repetition of a handful of fairly well-known tricks that exploit common weaknesses in the security of target systems. Accordingly, most crackers are only mediocre hackers.
