I read my news wherever possible, using RSS reader. Starting yesterday, when my reader tries to fetch the RSS feed from Slashdot.org (/.), they send back the following messages:

Your Headline Reader Has Been Banned
You May Only Load Headlines Every 30 Minutes
In 72 Hours, Your Ban Will Be Lifted
Do Not Bother Contacting Us For 72 Hours

To be the nice guy I have always been I had set the update frequency to 2 hours all the way from the beginning. So, I am pretty sure it was not me who was being the evil guy. I guess it has to be proxy server that I am behind which is creating the problem. I sent an email to /. guys explaining the problem. No reply so far. I guess I will have to just find a way to beat the system.

The last time it happened with slashdot was about 2 year ago. I had emailed malda asking where he got the nifty one-liners that were displayed on the bottom of the page. He refused to answer. So my scripts started fetching /. pages every 45 minutes to scrap through to get the quote. On emailing them on what is happening, malda replies, asking me not to exploit the system and then said that the lines were from the default fortune file in Unix.

Got to do something like that soon.

[update 3rd May 2003] An email seems to have done the trick. Everything seems to work fine now.
