'nother traveller on Singapore

Mark Moxon writes:
it seems too many Singaporeans are too caught up in office life to appreciate that there's a world out there. ..

And this true story has to be the best summary of Singapore's attitude towards life: when asked to comment on what he thought of the fact that some foreigners found Singapore dull, the Minister for Finance and Foreign Affairs, George Yeo, said: 'We have to pursue this subject of fun very seriously if we want to stay competitive in the 21st century'. Doh!
Of course he has good things to say. But that is not the theme of this post :)

At last, M.Sc. is done!
[Misc.] @ 01:30 PM

At long last, I have submitted my final thesis copy to the admin. Yahooo! Now, I can breath a sigh of relief.

I started my MSc. work in September 2000 and these 2 years have been one heack of a ride with its lows and highs. At times I have been so lost that I never thought I would finish the work. Had it not been for the constant support of Surya, I would still have been wandering around :) Thank you my love! I have to thank my parents too for having faith in me when I had lost mine.

Even though I am sure most of the people mentioned in this post would never read it, I still need to put down my appreciation in words, so here it goes:

I worked under Dr. A.L. Ananda in the field of computer networking protocols. He has been an inspiring supervisor, both demanding and understanding at the same time. His constant guidance and support has just been great! Thank you Prof. Even though I was not working under Dr. Lillykutty, I have always been able to discuss my ideas and my problems with her any time. Her critical comments and attention to minute details will always be appreciated.

Believe me when I say that masters can be stressful. Had it not been for my friends at CiR, I would by now had forgotten how to laugh and have fun! Thanks Renjish, Michael, Venky, Sudharsanan, Sridhar, Rahul and all others who made work fun.

My work is titled "Improving the Performance of TCP Vegas and TCP SACK: Investigations and Solutions". You can get the PDF version of the thesis here. It is a 1.35MB file. The abstract is as follows:

This thesis investigates the performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) over wired and satellite networks. In particular, it concentrates on the performance of TCP Vegas congestion avoidance mechanism and TCP Selective Acknowledgment (SACK) extension to TCP. The thesis reviews existing problems associated with these protocols and proposes solutions to overcome these limitations and improve their performance. Experimental results show that the modified TCP Vegas (called Vegas-A) and modified SACK are able to solve most of the problems identified, making TCP more resilient and efficient. The major features of the proposed changes are its reduced dependence on internal protocol constants, simplicity and ability to perform well in both wired and satellite network environments.

Keywords: Transmission Control Protocol, TCP Vegas, TCP SACK, Congestion Avoidance, Protocol Fairness, Satellite network.
