Flash mob in Singapore - not possible
[Society] @ 05:40 PM

Can a flash mob be ever staged in Singapore? (What is a flash mob?) I don't think so. If you take part in one, most probably you will find yourself behind bars. You see, in Singapore, you need a license to organize yourself into groups publicly and to speak to that group. I am not kidding!

Did someone *sigh*?

SC bans strike by government employees
[India] @ 04:55 PM

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that the government employees under no circumstances have any fundamental legal or moral right to go on strike.
Delivering a judgment, while disposing off petitions pertaining to Tamil Nadu government employees' strike, a bench comprising Justice M B Shah and Justice A R Lakshmanan said, "Even the trade unions, who have a guaranteed right for collective bargaining, have no right to go on strike."

Justice Shah writing the judgment for the bench said, "No political party or organisation can claim a right to paralyse the economic and industrial activities of a state or nation or inconvenience the citizens."
Report at Rediff.com

This is a very interesting and important decision. The question would be how of this is implemented in a society where people sees no harm in paralysing the whole system just to vent their individual or collective feelings.

Gentoo 1.4 released
[Software] @ 02:31 PM

Finally, Gentoo 1.4 has been released. After being in the release candidate stage for so long, 1.4 looks pretty impressive. I started "Gentooing" in the 1.4rc4 stage and I am pretty impressed. Even though I have not been able to dwell into the process of super-optimising the kernel and tweaking stuff around, "emerge" and "rc-update" has been real good in providing some powerful customisation feature.

A good thing about 1.4 release is that the second CD contains all the e-builds and source packages. So, you don't need a fat pipe to fetch all those package sources.

On forgiveness
[Quotes] @ 08:55 AM
