Yahoo 360, yet another social network?
[Technology] @ 07:43 PM

Recently I received a Yahoo 360 invitation from a friend of mine. The problem for me is, why should I join Yahoo 360, when I am on Orkut, LinkedIn etc.? What differentiates Yahoo 360 from them? What can Yahoo provide that these cannot? Until Yahoo points that out, I just don't feel like joining yet another social network. Am I missing something unique about Yahoo 360?

Mobile phone and flights
[Misc.] @ 05:27 PM

Remember the discourse that you hear every time you fly, asking you to switch off mobile phones throughout the flight? Many people seem to be under the false impression that this requirement is to prevent interference with the plane's communication equipments. This is not true. I was reminded of this recently when I forgot to switch off my mobile phone while flying.

The actual reason is that the phone would interfere with mobile networks on the ground, flying over several cells every minute causing hand off and other mobile chaos.

Phil Zimmermann working on VoIP security?
[Security] @ 05:02 PM

Recently, I heard someone mention that Phil Zimmermann (inventor of PGP) is working on VoIP security. Could be interesting to follow the development.

Back from Denver
[Personal] @ 03:16 PM

The blizzard did strike and for a while I was pretty convinced I will be stuck in Denver for a day or two. The shuttle bus people decided to cancel all runs for Sunday. Luckly a taxi driver was willing to try his luck and get me to the airport. Since it was afternoon by then, the tollway had been cleared by the CDOT people and we reached safe, though on the way I counted three cabs that had slipped out off the road onto nearby "grass". The Lufthansa flight left about three hours late, taxing around for about half an hour while the snow was being cleared from the takeoff strip.
