Hassles of volunteering
[Musings] @ 10:07 AM

When I read the news that Mozilla Updates is looking for volunteers to help in review of themes and extensions, I though this could be a good opportunity to help the guys who brought me my favorite browser and mail client. So I created an account and logged into the IRC channel. The channel topic asked me to read through the Wiki section on volunteering, and so I did. I was lost. It asked me to install the extensions, note the changes, whether it works, in which platforms does it works etc. and then to fill the "approval form". Huh? Where do I find the approval form? I guess I needed to be trusted/in-the-loop to be told where the form is. So I asked the channel. They pointed me to one person who might (!) know, so I asked him. He seemed to be in a hurry and asked me to read the wiki!

Oh well, if volunteering for Mozilla is so difficult, I guess I will rather donate my time to some other project that seems to care. I am sure if someone reads this post they will point out that everyone on that team is working on the project in their free time, they too have their own "day job", that I should persist and hold on and bug them enough. But my point is, if you are asking for volunteers, at least have the courtesy to give us the information required to volunteer. Have a simple clean system in place that leads a volunteer to the person who needs to be contacted, email address to which emails have to be sent asking for details, or wiki pages that explain things in detail. If you don't have them, put them in place and then, only then, ask for volunteer help.
