Book review - Network security hacks
[Literature] @ 06:20 PM

My review of "Network Security Hacks" by Andrew Lockhart has been published by ACM Reviews.com. A summary follows

The collection of 100 hacks that fills this book is not a one-stop overview of the broad area of network security, but it is filled with so much information that it could easily become one of the few books you will refer to frequently, if you are in the business of securing networks and systems.
..
The presentation is simple and easy to understand, though not geared toward a beginner. If you are new to the field of *nix and *BSD system and network security, you are better off starting with some other book.
..
Though mostly crisp and to the point, I did find the lengthy presentation of the installation steps of various tools to be a bit tangential to the topic at hand, and unnecessary. Providing tips on interesting configurations or options of a program is useful, but detailing how to install it ("./configure && make") is not.
..
In summary, if you are heavily into network security in a *nix or *BSD environment, this book contains some very useful hacks, and pointers to tools that can save you a lot of time and headaches. For the newly initiated, this book will present a pretty steep learning curve.
